WHO IS OSCAR?
Oscar is an Australian Great Egret and he is the largest of the Australian egrets. Oscar is a frequent visitor to On The Inlet Seafood Restaurant Port Douglas. Oscar’s overall plumage is white, and, for most of the year, when not breeding, his bill and facial skin is yellow. During the breeding season (October to December), Oscar’s bill turns black and his facial skin becomes green. Additionally long hair-like feathers called nuptial plumes hang across Oscar the Great egret’s lower back. Great Egrets are common and familiar throughout Australia, with the exception of the most arid areas.

The Great Egret usually feeds alone on feeds on molluscs, amphibians, aquatic insects, small reptiles, crustaceans and other small animals, but fish make up the bulk of its diet.

The Great Egret usually hunts in water, wading through the shallows, or stands motionless before stabbing at prey. Because of his large, sharp beak, Oscar the Great Egret can be VERY CAREFULLY handfed by some of our staff. Oscar the Egret’s favorite nibble at On The Inlet seafood Restaurant is calamari!

Resident breeding pairs of Ospreys, Sea Eagles and Brahminy Kites can also be observed from the decking of On the Inlet Seafood Restaurant Port Douglas. Other birdlife such as  Herons and spoonbills, are also seen regularly.
